About

Thomas Kiesewetter is a german sculptor. His monochrome sculptures, usually presented on a classic plinth, are made of aluminum or bronze. Furthermore he engages in print making: monochrome linoleum cuts that are strongly related to his sculptural works. Kiesewetter’s sculptures have a distinct architectural aspect for those familiar with deconstructivist or utopian architecture, at the same time they seem to be a contemporary realisation of sculptures informed by some kind of collective modern sculpture memory bank. There is an aspect of bricolage in his work, it is visible where parts are mount and how, there is someting unfinished and rough about some, though they seem to be crafted with accuracy. His sculptures deal with classical sculptural aspects such as space and light, and the fact that he prefers monochrome objects emphasises the effects of light on the surfaces in an almost playful way. Experiencing a solo show by Kiesewetter with sculptures in different colors brings up many different questions for the viewer: Is there some irony going on? Is he deliberately quoting other (modern) sculptors? Does he like constructivism/deconstructivism? Am I allowed to think of children’s toys? Are these funny or deadly serious? Is this anthropomorphous?
His position is utterly versatile while remaining in a very restricted formal realm.
